Dear Friends,
I'd just like to send you the best of this year's harvest
from the alt.ascii-art newsgroup:

1) Update on VSNS-BCD activities
Slide Show: We're now presenting some of the experiences with the Summer
1995 course in a very nifty slide-show, at
http://www.techfak.uni-bielefeld.de/bcd/Faculty/Slides/welcome.html
(and the usual mirror sites; all homepages have a link to it).
I'm greatly indebted to Sebastien Lemieux and Nikolaj Blom for their
assistance in preparing the show; take a look what a great job they did !
Hypertext Coursebook: The finalization of our book is still being delayed
by several problems, but we hope to finish all chapters in early January.
(Chapter 1 is still the least finished one. Also, redesigning the exercises
covering FASTA and BLAST databank searches is part of our efforts
to improve and update this chapter.)
Dr Bill Pearson's Electronic Conference on "Protein Evolution - How far
back can we see?" (Dec 5, 1995 in BioMOO) was quite a success, and the
transcript is currently being translated to HTML. It will be available on
our homepage, and be announced widely.
The results of the End-of-Term Student Questionaire we did last summer
will be compiled during the Christmas holidays (big hope :-), and be made
available on our homepage.
Self-assessment exercises are currently being prepared by Mykol Larvie
(mykol@mit.edu). Multiple Alignment exercises are nearing completion,
but Self-assessment questions about Networking, Phylogenetic Analysis,
Genetic Algorithms / Protein Folding, and Pairwise Alignment (or other
topics related to Ch.1) are still missing. Please get in contact with us
if you want to contribute some !
2) Open Consulting Student positions
[ Please see http://www.techfak.uni-bielefeld.de/bcd/Adm/recruit.html
for more even more "jobs", and general information. ]
a) "BioMOO Help-Guide" ("Job" #BCD-96-09)
You will introduce Instructors / Group Leaders, Students,
Journalists, etc to BioMOO.
You need: Familiarity with BioMOO basic commands.
Your benefit: You are admitted to the Summer 1996 course as a "Consulting
Student". This job is also a perfect way of getting into contact with
lots of interesting ppl.
b) Virtual Reality Modeling Language : Project Manager / Coordinator
We're currently looking for a project manager who would like to get
involved into VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) coding.
The task is to develop a 3-dimensional animation of sequence alignment.
Two people are already keen to become involved in the project, but none of
them wants to coordinate it. VRML is getting "hot" like HTML was 2 years
ago :) Another useful skill for this job is either C, MOO-coding _or_ Perl.
We're open for other suggestions (Java ?!). Please email me (just reply
to this message) if you're interested.
3) PRINCIPLES OF PROTEIN STRUCTURE on the Internet
It's a delight that last year's sister course on Protein Structure
(organized by Peter Murray-Rust and Alan Mills at that time) will
be repeated early next year, once again setting new standards for
education through the Internet. The following is the "official
announcement":

CRYSTALLOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT
>From January 15th 1996 we are running a part-time London University Advanced
Certificate course on PRINCIPLES OF PROTEIN STRUCTURE on the Internet (a
formalised version of last year's course).
Units are:
1) IT and Bioinformatics
2) Protein Structure
3) Dissertation: structure, function and dynamics
The course covers one academic year of three terms, from January 15 to 25
October 1996. Costs are: 186 pounds sterling (EU): 500 pounds sterling (world).
For details of course contents, administration and registration, see our

4) New mailing lists: Events, Media, Class of 95 Alumni, Ethical Issues
Some new mailing lists have recently been set up:
Events/Announcements (vsns-bcd-events)
Moderated list for Invitations to our "Distinguished Lecturer Series" and
our "BioMOO Plenary Discussion Series" (in preparation).
Media Issues (vsns-bcd-media)
For discussions about "Interactive Media" use, etc.
Class of 95 Alumni List (vsns-bcd-class-of-95)
How this list is used is up to the "Alumni/ae";
for example this list may develop into a list where you can ask
questions that you don't want to ask on bionet, because too many
people are listening there. For this reason, the URL of the hypermail
archive will not be advertised on our WWW servers unless there is a
consensus that it should be. The list may even agree that no archive
should be kept.
( All the old subscribers to vsns-bcd-students have been subscribed to
vsns-bcd-class-of-95. If you want to unsubscribe, contact me, or send email to
majordomo@lists.uni-bielefeld.de, with no subject line, and the following body

Please send your email from the account which is registered by our Majordomo,
i.e. the account to which the Majordomo is sending the emails. If that's
impossible, you need to contact me. )
Ethical Issues (vsns-bcd-ethics)
For discussions about Ethics in Biocomputing.
See http://www.techfak.uni-bielefeld.de/bcd/Adm/lists.html
for a list of all our mailing lists.

5) New Copyright Statement for VSNS-BCD Coursebook Chapters, etc
I hope that the new Copyright Statement below (which replaces the old
``Further details are currently being worked out. Please inquire.'')
encourages the use and redistribution of our Hypertext Coursebook and
other documents. It holds for most of the files that are part of our WWW
pages; I'm currently contacting the remaining authors of some small
files that are not yet covered by it.
